Understanding Reiki

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a gentle energy healing practice rooted in the idea that a universal life force energy flows through all living things. This energy has its own intelligence — it naturally finds its way to where healing is needed most, whether physically, mentally, emotionally, or spiritually.

Reiki flows through a trained, attuned practitioner to the person receiving healing. The practitioner acts as a conduit — they are not the source of healing, simply the channel through which energy moves. Because Reiki is self-guiding, the practitioner doesn’t direct it; it finds what needs attention on its own.

While science is still exploring the full picture, it is generally recognized that Reiki’s deeply relaxing effects support the body’s own natural healing processes.

Reiki can support healing on many levels — physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. In every session, I’ll invite you to stay open and curious after you leave, noticing any shifts that arise. These may be subtle, like feeling calmer or more focused, or more unexpected, like a chance conversation that points you toward exactly what you needed.

Reiki is not a religion and requires no specific beliefs. Practitioners come from all faith backgrounds — Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Pagan, atheist, and everything in between. The only thing Reiki asks of you is an open mind and a willingness to receive. You don’t need to believe in anything for it to work. Curiosity is enough.

Yes. Reiki is gentle, non-invasive, and oriented entirely toward your highest good. It works with your energy, not against it.

No. Reiki is a complementary practice, not a replacement for medical or mental health care. I am not licensed to diagnose, treat, or prescribe anything. If you are in a medical or mental health crisis, please reach out to your doctor or dial 911. Reiki works best alongside your existing care team — think of it as one more source of support on your healing journey.

Reiki is generally considered safe for children and pregnant people. That said, it is my personal policy to work only with clients aged 18 and older. Those who are pregnant are encouraged to consult their physician before exploring any alternative therapies.

Yes. Distance is no barrier to Reiki energy. During my training, I practiced successfully with students via video conference — a firsthand reminder of just how intelligent and far-reaching this energy is. Virtual sessions are available for those who prefer to receive Reiki from the comfort of their own space.

Your Session

How should I prepare for my session?

Before your session, drink plenty of water — especially important at Colorado Springs’ altitude. Arrive with a sense of what you’d like to focus on, even if it’s just a feeling rather than a fully formed goal. Wear comfortable, loose clothing, and avoid alcohol or other mind-altering substances beforehand. Most importantly, come with an open mind. That’s the only thing you truly need.

We’ll begin by talking through your intention for the session — what you’re hoping to release, clarify, or invite in. From there, I’ll guide you through a short, personalized meditation to help you settle. Then you’ll relax in the recliner while I channel Reiki energy using hands-off technique, hovering my hands near your body without physical contact. After the session, we’ll close with a brief check-in and I’ll share any impressions that came through during the healing.

Every experience is different. Some people notice warmth, coolness, or gentle tingling. Others drop into a deep stillness. Some feel emotions rise and release. And some don’t feel much at all during the session itself — and that’s completely okay. Reiki works regardless of what you consciously notice. If anything feels overwhelming at any point, just let me know. You can always pause or end the session early.

Keep hydrating and be curious about what arises in the days following your session. Some people notice clarity, vivid dreams, a sense of lightness, or emotions that surface for processing. Others simply feel rested. Healing unfolds in its own timing — give yourself grace and space for it. If strong emotions arise that feel difficult to navigate alone, please reach out to a licensed therapist for additional support.

Goals are a compass, not a contract. Life rarely moves in a straight line, and sometimes what looks like a detour turns out to be exactly where you needed to go. Together we’ll set intentions that feel realistic and meaningful — and if life shifts things around, we can revisit, reassess, and adjust. What matters most is that you keep moving forward in a direction that feels true to you.

That’s entirely up to you. Some people find one session gives them exactly what they needed. Others return for a series of sessions to work through a bigger goal or transition. There’s no prescription here — just an open door for as long as you feel called to walk through it.

The most obvious difference: you keep all your clothes on! More seriously, massage therapy works by physically manipulating soft tissue to promote healing. Reiki does not involve physical manipulation at all — hands are held gently on or above the body, and the work happens at an energetic level. The two can complement each other beautifully, but they are quite different practices.

Loose, comfortable clothing is ideal. For in-person sessions, please be prepared to remove your shoes at the door — feel free to bring slippers or cozy socks if that makes you more comfortable. The goal is for you to feel completely at ease from the moment you arrive.
